As we enter the holiday season and look ahead to the New Year, we extend our warm appreciation to all of you. Your involvement and support continue to make BHNC a strong, vibrant, and caring community. We are always happy to welcome new members. If you have friends or neighbors who might enjoy being part of this wonderful neighborhood club, please encourage them to join us.
For our January program, we are pleased to welcome as our guest speakers, Matt Barrows, a reporter who has covered the San Francisco 49ers for more than two decades for The Athletic and the Sacramento Bee and Jessica Barrows Beebe, a former journalist, editor and national TV news producer, authors of Muddy the Water, They will share insights into their work, the inspiration behind their book, and engage with members during a question-and-answer session. We look forward to an informative and enjoyable presentation.
The BHNC Board is also seeking members who may be interested in contributing their time, ideas, and leadership for the term starting July 2026. If you would like to learn more about serving on the Board, please feel free to contact Gloria McKay (gloriamckay@yahoo.com).
We would also like to share information about the El Camino Real Roadway Renewal Project. Caltrans, in coordination with the City of Burlingame and the neighboring cities of Hillsborough, San Mateo, and Millbrae, is leading an effort to revitalize a key section of State Route 82 (El Camino Real), extending from East Santa Inez Avenue in San Mateo to Millbrae Avenue in Millbrae. The project focuses on enhancing roadway and sidewalk safety, mitigating localized
flooding, improving visibility, upgrading pedestrian accessibility, and preserving the historic tree grove that characterizes this iconic corridor.

Matt Barrows and his sister Jessica Barrows Beebe will talk about their book, “Muddy the Water”
“When a popular fishing captain is murdered on his own New England trawler, everyone knows the culprit is a young deckhand named Ben Broome—including Detective Lillian Grimes. But Ben has discovered the perfect hiding place: as a reporter writing for the tiny Coastal Packet, a newspaper in South Carolina.
Shown from three perspectives, killer, detective, and reporter, Muddy the Water brings readers inside the newsroom of a struggling small newspaper on the bucolic South Carolina coast and speaks to the concept of identity—and whether anyone ever shows their true self.”
MATT BARROWS is a reporter who has covered the San Francisco 49ers for more than two decades for The Athletic and the Sacramento Bee. An avid birder and amazing uncle, Matt thinks his older sister is bossy and sends too many early-morning texts.
JESSICA BARROWS BEEBE is a former journalist, editor and national TV news producer. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia. Jessica has three adult-ish children and her happy place is with her husband in Midcoast Maine in summer. Her brother thinks he’s the funny one, but clearly he’s wrong.
