She personally visited each newcomer with a warm welcome and a basket of goodies, including coupons for local stores and valuable information about the community. She was what we might call today, the “Google “ source. Everyone who was visited by her remembers her as a lovely, warm and welcoming person. She went out of her way to make women new to the area, feel that they were among friends. After her personal visit, Martha would send each newcomer a personally written invitation to join other members at a monthly luncheon, usually held at a local restaurant. In addition, to foster friendships, newcomers were invited to someone’s home for a meet and greet coffee with other new and existing members.
On November 1, 1950 ninety three women met for a luncheon meeting at Green Hills Country Club. Burlingame Vice Mayor H. Kent Atwater Sr. was on hand to greet them. Forty three became members of the Burlingame Newcomers Club. Hillsborough was added to the name in 1971.
Martha Chick welcomed approximately 12,000 to the community over 25 years. Of that number, nearly 5,000 became members of BHNC. By1975 there were 700 members.
